The Photograph Not Yet Taken

She never slept in that apartment again.

She moved to Reem's — the one friend who knew everything, unpolished. They sat until dawn, Reem reading each message aloud, hunting a pattern she couldn't quite find.

"Here's the strange part," she finally said. "Everything warning you about outside danger — the car, the elevator, the street — lands with a broken timestamp. Like an old signal, lost, arriving late but still on time for what matters. But whatever knows private things? Whatever sent that photo? Its timing is exact. That's not an old echo, Yasmin. That's someone talking to you right now."

"So there are two of them?"

"Or one thing acting two different ways. I don't know. And I'm not sure the difference matters as much as whether the thing protecting you from a truck is the same thing that's in your bedroom."

Yasmin had no answer for that.

In the morning, Mazen's desk was empty for the first time in years. She called him. He answered in a voice so tired she barely knew it.

"I'm fine. Just can't come in today."

"Mazen — do the messages reach you too?"

A long silence. "For years. Not daily, like you. But they come."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because every time I tried to protect someone from it, it found them anyway." He paused. "There's a place you need to see with your own eyes. I can't explain it to you. The place explains itself better than I can."

"What place?"

"I'll tell you when we go. Not now."

Before the call ended, a separate message arrived, no lead-in at all:

*In 3 days. 11:47 PM. A call is coming for you. Don't answer.*

She pulled the raw data with a hand shaking harder than she could control.

Live timestamp. Real. Now.

She called Mazen back immediately. This time, he didn't pick up.

Two minutes later, a message arrived from a number that wasn't her own — for the first time all week.

Mazen's number.

She opened it.

*Don't believe everything that reaches you, even from my number.*

Next Episode: The Dead Station — The countdown has started, and now even Mazen can't be fully trusted.
